YELLOW CAR SYNDROME
1 Thessalonians 5:18 calls us to give thanks in all circumstances. It’s a challenging verse. We’re naturally grateful in good times, but what about the challenging times? Well, even if it doesn’t come naturally, the art of thanksgiving can be awakened in our hearts when we conscientiously take note of the goodness of God, even when life is challenging.
A person who buys a yellow car is likely to starts noticing other yellow cars all around them, although the quantity of yellow cars probably hasn’t increased. This is called "Yellow Car Syndrome" (or the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon) whereby a person notices a specific concept, word, or product more frequently after it has captured their attention. Has the goodness of God captured your attention? When we become captivated by His goodness, all of a sudden we begin to notice how much there is to be grateful for, and then it really becomes possible to give thanks in every circumstance. Let’s work on the art of giving thanks to the Lord, for HE IS GOOD, and His steadfast love endures forever, (Psalm 136).
