KNOWING THE LOVE OF CHRIST
“Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Most English speaking Christians of our day know these words well. We’ve heard them as a lullaby and sung them in the congregation, but do we know them to be true? Sure, we know in our heads that Jesus loves us. We believe the Bible and verses like John 15:13; Romans 5:8 and 1 John 4:18 make this clear, but do we know Christ’s love in our hearts?
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians begins by laying out the doctrine of God’s love for us and ends by calling us to respond to that love, but right in the middle of the letter (Ephesians 3:14-21), he pauses to pray an incredible prayer that is worth meditating on. As part of this prayer (v19), he prays that his readers would truly know the love of Christ in a way that surpasses knowledge. His prayer was that they wouldn’t only know that Jesus loves them in their heads or as the words of a song, but that they would truly grasp His love in the depths of their beings. Likewise, my prayer for you and for me is that we truly know Christ’s love for us in a way that surpasses knowledge.
