WALKING UPWARDS

We all know how to walk up stairs. Unless we’re challenged by injury or age, most of us manage to do so without thinking too much about it. Yet, even for those who find it challenging for one reason or another, where there is a will there is usually a way. Now, we might be proficient at climbing physical staircases, but of greater importance is how we do when it comes to taking steps towards spiritual maturity. In 2 Peter 3:18, the Apostle Peter helps us to see that moving towards spiritual maturity isn’t about working out how to become perfect in our own strength, as if such a thing were even possible. It’s about growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. That’s really the essence of spiritual maturity. There is a big difference between trying to become perfect in our own strength and genuine spiritual growth. The former produces frustration, whereas the latter produces fruit. As we genuinely grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, we begin to naturally respond to His goodness and grace in a way that is glorifying to Him, and that’s what spiritual maturity is really all about. How appropriate then, that the second part of 2 Peter 3:18 reads, “To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” As the people of NLC then, let’s diligently take steps towards God glorifying spiritual maturity.
