STAYING CONNECTED

In February 1877, Guernsey was thrown into a commotion when an offshore breakage in the sole communications cable to the Channel Island forced islanders to return to communicating with the outside world by ship. Having grown familiar with the ease of communicating by cable, islanders found the several weeks of repair time to be a trying ordeal. I imagine they felt how we might feel about an extended crash of the internet, because we’ve grown so accustomed to accessing it.

Of far greater importance than connecting with the outside world, is our connection to the One who came into the world to reconnect us with the Father. In John 15:4, Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” And then, in case there was any doubt, Jesus went on to say “apart from Me you can do nothing.” Besides the unrivaled joy that it is to abide in the vine, have we come to recognise that unless we stay connected to Jesus, we can accomplish nothing of value? If we have recognised this, the good news is that Jesus is always available for us to connect with in prayer, and no breakage or crash can ever stop that. So, although we sometimes struggle to hear His voice over the noise of this earth, let’s be sure to always stay connected with the One who we will eventually see face to face, for all of eternity (1 Corinthians 13:12).
