Psalm 90:12 associates a heart of wisdom with the one who numbers their days. None of us know exactly how many days we will have upon the earth, but it is wise to remember that our days are numbered, thereby making the most of the time we have been given. Do you know that we are given 525600 minutes, or 8760 hours, each year? How will we spend our time in the coming year? Will we use it to pursue sinful pleasures and selfish gain, or will we endeavour to live each moment for Christ?
1 Corinthians 10:3 is a great reminder that we are called to spend every moment bringing glory to God: "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." According to Scripture, we are called to glorify God in every moment of our lives for at least two reasons: Firstly, because He is absolutely worthy. Revelations 4:11 says this: “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” Secondly, we glorify God because the onlooking world may come to do the same as they consider our ways. "Let your light shine before others," says Jesus in Matthew 5:16, "so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
As we head into 2022, all 525600 minutes of it, let's be a people who live for Christ and rest in His grace, making the most of every opportunity as we engage in the world around us (Colossians 4:5-6). Let's be a people who conduct ourselves "not as unwise but as wise, making the best of the time" (Ephesians 5:16). May you have a wonderfully Christ-centred and God-glorifying 2022.
