AUGUST 2024.
HOW TO DEAL WITH FLIES.

Have you ever been distracted by a noisy fly? As I sat down to quietly write this devotional thought, I became aware that a buzzing fly was competing for my attention. Even when it settled, I knew that the silence would be momentary before the disruption recommenced.

How do we find lasting stillness in a world that is filled with all kinds of fly-like distractions that seem to draw us away from focusing on the things of God? Well, perhaps a good starting point is to remember that our Lord is the Lord of the flies. Not in the William Golding sense, but in the sense that He is Lord over all the earth, including the flies. Exodus 8 tells us that He sent flies to demonstrate His might to the Egyptians; and Isaiah 7:18 indicates that flies respond to His whistle. If He is Lord of the flies, I wonder if God whistled to my noisy fly to serve as the inspiration for this devotional thought. Because He is Lord of all, we do well to always look out for the good things that God is accomplishing even when our circumstances are frustrating. In Him all things work for good in the end, (Romans 8:28.)

On the other hand, sometimes we need to actively deal with noisy flies. Occasionally, the surrounding farms generously donate their flies to the Krige household, and when they do, we bring out a rock pooling net to catch the flies and then crush them. It may be an unusual method but it is remarkably effective. Are there any ungodly distractions in your life that you need to identify, catch and then crush? Why not give it some prayerful thought this August, and then trust Him to guide and strengthen you for the task at hand.
